As Community Outreach Coordinator, she is responsible for getting knowledge of DifferentBrains.org into the community, getting speaking engagements for our founder Dr. Hackie Reitman, and working with the interns to eventually get them working in the community.
In addition to her work at DifferentBrains.org, Debbi is involved in fundraising for her family charity Stratton Home Charitable Foundation, a foundation that helps the underprivileged. Stratton Home Charitable Foundation was founded with the motto of “Helping Kids, Strengthening Families, Building Communities”. What began as a small toy drive with yearly contributions by Stratton Home Décor founder Joel Merkur turned into a collaboration with the City of Pembroke Park, Broward Sherriff’s Office, the local Fire Department, and donations from individuals. These donations have benefitted local families and over 1,000 children in the community. In 2014, Stratton Home Charitable Foundation was founded by The Merkur & Siegel families in the memory of Joel and became an official tax-exempt 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The Foundation ensures that the tradition and vision that Joel Merkur started, which was helping children and their families within our community, continues.
Her passion to help others began early in life when she was thrust into assisting her parents in the development of her younger brother. Over the last 40 years, Debbi has provided emotional and structural support. She helped her brother learn to read and write. This work led to her involvement with YALD (Young Adults with Learning Disabilities). She helped run programming for the young adults involved as well as the families.
Debbi is now consulting for Stratton Home Decor, a family owned and operated company where she once served as Vice President of Operations. Stratton Home Decor specializes in wall decor backed by a team of experienced designers and product managers located in the United States and Asia.
